Packaging has the function of promoting economic development, but mass production of the packaging, left considerable negative effects to society. The packaging industry consumes a lot of resources, waste packaging on the environment caused by pollution. The packaging designers should have a strong environmental awareness and take full account of the packaging box structure, materials and printing processes, to the final waste disposal, etc., as far as possible to make the packaging design reasonable, material saving, beautiful and practical, therefore, advocate awareness of green packaging design is quite necessary.

After use, the vast majority of packaging may not escape the possibilities to become garbage while in the logistics process, packaging is essential, then how to reduce waste, how to make good use of garbage is a big problem in front of globalization ecological balance.

According to research that the plastic packaging in China's current annual production is more than 2 million tons, which accounted for 30% of disposable plastic packaging difficult to recycle, besides, waste produced annually is about 16 million tons, the mainly plastic waste of packaging products estimated as many as 1 million tons per year, including lunch boxes, cups and saucers, foam, beverage bottles, plastic packaging for a variety of candy and food, as well as all kinds of plastic bags, etc.. These white trash on the surface to stay for quite some time and will not disappear. Thus, packaging waste has been slow but steadily erosion of our living environment, all of us should take care of the daily garbage and develop alternative products to curb the environmental pollution problems.

The formulation and initiatives of green design and green packaging can be described as the reassuring message of the field, to become a reality and the future direction of development of civilization. As early as the 1980s, Germany was the first launch of the "green dot" (DER GRUNE PUNKT, green product packaging design) logo "green packaging". Green packaging in the next ten years, it spread to the countries in the world, until 1993, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the formal establishment of the Committee on the Environment proceed to develop green standards.

In addition to using the green flag, the development of green, eco-performance packaging materials, is the most substantial initiatives. For example, the familiar candy wrappers, rice paper and the corn bake packaging cup of the ice cream are typical edible packaging. Such and similar materials is pollution-free, can be widely promoted. Furthermore, we should try to use recycled materials and renewable materials, increasing the recycling of materials, conservation of global resources.

In summary, it is an important way to solve the packaging issues from the development of packaging materials and it is one of the factors to ensure the sustainable development of green packaging. In addition, in the packaging design part, the selection packaging materials reasonably combined with sound ideas, also plays a pivotal role in the development of green packaging.

Green packaging is not only a revolution the packaging design facing itself, it is also a revolution for packaging material and our human existence derivatives. Green packaging brings more challenges for packaging design, it also brings more opportunities.
